Anticipating the Consortium for Literature, Theory, and Culture’s upcoming conference on Time, we’ll be screening Primer, a unique and original time travel movie.  Written and directed by Shane Carruth, Primer was shot on a $7000 budget and went on to win the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize in 2004.  When four engineers accidentally create a time machine, their experiments with time travel soon begin to unfold in unexpected ways.  By tempting its characters with the power of using present knowledge to affect the past, the film challenges our notions of time’s effects on power, truth and ethics, and involves the viewer in a puzzle of labyrinthine time-lines and temporal paradoxes.

Along with Marshall McLuhan, Baudrillard was perhaps the most influential thinker of his time in terms of recognizing the uncomfortably strong influence modern media in the postindustrial age has over society and culture. With an intellectual background ranging from sociology to semiotics, he wrote numerous theses advancing an argument against the drive towards mass consumerism.

Designed specifically for instructors to learn the pedagogical  applications of video editing, the workshop will teach you how to edit film clips so that you can smoothly integrate them into your lectures. 

 The workshop will start with a demonstration of how you might use video editing in a lecture.  You will then learn how to rip and edit clips and export them to DVD or Quicktime (depending on the capabilities of your classroom).  There will be a dicussion of technical questions as well as of copyright/intellectual property issues.  There will also be time for Q&A and perhaps a short iMovie tutorial if people are interested.

Dreamweaver web-authoring tutorials are open to everyone but are designed specifically to aid students who have web-authoring assignments due at the end of the quarter. The tutorial will cover basic skills including: defining the site, connecting to UWeb through FTP, making simple pages, making links, adding images, using tables, and uploading pages. It will also provide resources for intermediate skills (like using templates, layers, and graphics).

“How much feelings have an Avatar? Where is the intersection between Real- and Virtual-Life?  And is it possible to spread out a Virus who is reacting to the personal behaviours of Avatars in Second Life?

These questions are the starting point of the media art project by Michael Mastrototaro (aka MACHFELD).  http://www.machfeld.net

 The bright light of the digital culture burns with a vision of being in communities…and the user is not alone any more in this virtual hyperspace.  All this very hype Online-Communities like Second Life, MySpace and so on gives us an overview that togetherness helps us to define our daily needs and to find out what we really want in both lives.

 But what’s happening if someone installs real life behaviours like illness in these very frequented online worlds?”

 This event is part of the UCSB English Department’s Second Life Project.
